Garry Monk has confirmed that Alex Mowatt’s transfer from Leeds to Barnsley is all but done – and fans on Twitter have said that they are sad to see him go.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Lee Sobot reported on his personal Twitter account Monk’s comments on Friday where he stated that the Mowatt deal is “far down the line”.

The 21-year-old came through the ranks at the club, but he has been a fringe player this season under Monk.

Therefore, it is understandable that fans on Twitter were sad to see him go considering the connections Mowatt has with the Elland Road faithful.

One fan stated that the Whites are aiming for promotion this season and if it means selling players they don’t need then they have to make those decisions.

Monk’s side are sitting in third place in the Championship table, eight points ahead of seventh-placed Derby as a top six finish is becoming more likely.

Nonetheless, as Leeds push for a return to the top-flight for the first time in 13 years, fans did state that the club should bring in more players when Mowatt leaves.

One supporter was hoping that there is a sell on clause in Mowatt’s deal, while another felt he might follow in the footsteps of Robert Snodgrass and become a brilliant player down the line.

But with the departure of Mowatt beckoning, fans saw the positive sides in signing playmaker Pablo Hernandez on a permanent basis as centre-back Pontus Jansson may also follow suit.

Overall, supporters stated that it is a shame their academy product will leave, but they did feel he did provide a great service to them.
