Leeds fans react on Twitter to Bartley performance at both ends in win v Derby

By Alex Stevens

What defensive crisis? Leeds fans were ecstatic on Twitter after Kyle Bartley helped his side to a fifth Championship win in six games, and happy that his shocking miss in the first half didn’t come back to haunt them

Garry Monk was without three key defenders in Pontus Jansson, who was suspended, and Charlie Taylor and Liam Cooper, who were both injured.

Kyle Bartley and Luke Ayling held firm in the centre of the Leeds defence though, and Bartley had the best chances to score in the first half, including a simple tap-in at the far post that he somehow conspired to put wide.

Leeds fans were relieved when top scorer Chris Wood came up with a towering header just before half-time, and even happier that their team saw out the 90 minutes to score a hugely important win against their play-off rivals.

They saw the funny side of Bartley’s miss and praised his overall performance.

Here is a selection of their messages:

The win lifts Leeds to the lofty height of third in the Championship, just four points behind once-runaway leaders Newcastle, and six points behind leaders Derby. Both of those teams have a game in hand.

More importantly it puts them eight points clear of Derby in seventh, with a clear momentum that makes them favourites to finish the season in the top six.

Could Monk do it in his first season in charge? You wouldn’t bet against them at the moment.
