'A God' - Leeds fans react on Twitter to Pontus Jansson display for Sweden

By Alex Stevens

Pontus Jansson inspired Sweden to a stunning 3-2 win against Portugal on Tuesday night – Leeds and fans took to Twitter to hail the defender.

Sweden were 2-0 down at half-time in the friendly international when Jansson was brought on as a replacement for national team skipper Andreas Granqvist.

Portugal, who were playing in Madeira, the home island of Cristiano Ronaldo, appeared in complete control following the superstar forward’s 71st international goal and an Andreas Granqvist own goal.

But a Viktor Claesson double and Cavaco Cancelo’s injury-time own goal secured a remarkable turnaround for the Swedes.

Leeds fans noted the contribution of Jansson during the international break, both against star-studded Portugal and Belarus in the 4-0 World Cup qualifier win four days earlier.

During Jansson’s time on the pitch, Portugal did not concede a goal in 135 minutes and, when he was sidelined, they shipped two goals in 45 minutes.

Supporters hailed him as “a God” for his messianic qualities.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The defender has been a mainstay of Leeds’ promotion-chasing side, starting 28 of their 38 Championship matches since joining from Torino initially on a season-long loan.

Such has been his impact that he has already agreed to join Leeds on a permanent deal at the end of the season, having already signed a three-year contract.

Jansson was surprisingly axed from the team before the international break and will be pushing hard for a recall when the promotion hopefuls, who rose to fourth in the Championship following their win over Brighton, are next in action against Reading on Saturday.

In other Leeds team news, the Yorkshire giants are in shock talks to sign a Liverpool attacking player.
