Leeds Untied fans have taken to Twitter to slam Conor Shaughnessy for his performance in the 1-0 defeat to Birmingham at St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon.
Shaughnessy, 21, was a shock inclusion in Thomas Christiansen’s starting line-up ahead of their trip to the Second City, starting ahead of the likes of Mateusz Klich and Vurnon Anita in the midfield.
The former Reading youngster has spent most of his first-team appearances for Leeds at centre-back, but was played in his more natural position in the midfield against Championship strugglers Birmingham.
However although he was playing in his traditional role, Leeds fans didn’t see Shaughnessy put in as good a performance as what he had put in when filling in at centre-back earlier this season.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international filled in the backline when Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington all struggled with suspensions and injuries earlier this term.
However since they have returned to fitness, Shaugnessy has struggled for game-time.
Christiansen gave him his chance against Birmingham, but according to those who watched on, the midfielder did not do himself any favours.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
I think this settles the debate as to if Shaughnessy is a CB or CM. He's a CB

Would rather have Klich on, Anita hasn't played there for a while

Shaughnessy is good and that but as a CM he seemed lost in that half, much prefer anita or Klich

Not a game for Hernandez. Getting caught far too often. Alioski a shadow of himself on the left and Shaughnessy not ready for CDM role just yet. #lufc

Shaughnessy should stay in dressing room for second half #lufc

Midfield struggled badly so far. Shaughnessy struggling to fit in.

Shaugnessy has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season.
He made his debut on the opening day win against Bolton after being snapped up from Reading in September 2016 after a successful trial period.
In other Leeds United news, it has been confirmed that a seven-figure bid has been tabled for this 21-goal striker wanted by the Whites.
