'Sunday league', 'Sell him' - Leeds fans tear £500k player to shreds for display v Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United fans have torn Caleb Ekuban to shreds for his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Ekuban, 23, was selected to start up front for the second Championship game in a row by Paul Heckingbottom as Pierre-Michel Lasogga had to make do with a spot on the bench yet again.

However the former Chievo forward, who was signed for £500,000 in the summer, did little to endear himself to a set of fans who are becoming increasingly frustrated with Victor Orta’s recruitment drive last year.

One angry Whites supporter claimed that Ekuban was “Sunday league” quality against Sheffield Wednesday.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Ekuban’s time at Leeds has been plagued with injury after he was snapped up in the summer but both Thomas Christiansen and Heckingbottom have tried to use him as much as possible when available.

The forward has made 14 appearances in all competitions for United, but has scored just once when he found the net against Port Vale on his debut in the Carabao Cup.

It seems likely that Heckingbottom will once again rotate his squad after the international break after Ekuban’s poor showing in front of goal and Lasogga will no doubt be the favourite to replace him.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have terminated this 24-year-old defender’s deal at the club.
