Leeds fans urge top-flight striker to sign after he posts Twitter message to club
By Alex Stevens
Leeds fans have urged Toulouse striker Martin Braithwaite to sign after he posted a Twitter message demonstrating his extensive knowledge of the club.
The Denmark international, who plays for the Ligue 1 outfit as well as his national team, messaged the official Twitter account of the Yorkshire giants after spotting a peacock in his garden on Wednesday.
Displaying his knowledge of Leeds’ history, Braithwaite, 25, made a tongue-in-cheek reference to the club’s old nickname, the Peacocks.
Leeds are now known as simply ‘United’ or ‘Whites’, after their present colours, but the club’s previous nickname of the ‘Peacocks’, stemming from the public house that once stood opposite Elland Road, was commonly used by previous generations of supporters.
The fans responded to Braithwaite’s message by urging the forward on Twitter to push for what would be a headline-grabbing transfer to Leeds.
The Elland Road faithful are keen for the 25-year-old to form what would be a potent strike force with Chris Wood, the leading scorer in the Championship this season.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter.
Braithwaite’s interest in Leeds comes at a time when the club are in the market to sign a new striker to relieve some of the burden on Chris Wood, who has scored 22 goals in the league and 25 in all competitions this season.
Braithwaite has made a big impact at 11th-placed Toulouse, where he is club captain and leads the attack, scoring 11 goals in 27 matches, including an impressive 10 league goals.
The forward has also accumulated 14 international caps, which have yielded a single goal to date.
In other Leeds news, the Yorkshire giants are in shock talks to sign a Liverpool attacking player.
