Leeds pundit shares bold Kalvin Phillips prediction after Ornstein update today
Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will “100 per cent” start against Germany tonight.
That is the view of former Whites and Middlesbrough striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Gareth Southgate’s team selection for England last 16 tie at Wembley.
Phillips started all three of England’s games in the group stage and particularly impressed in their 1-0 win over Croatia.
According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein (29 June), the Three Lions are set to line up in a 3-4-3 formation with Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka supporting Harry Kane up top.
Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount, who has been in isolation for a week, are all expected to be named on the bench.
That formation would leave two places to be filled in the centre of the midfield with Phillips, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson the most likely candidates.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Henderson may be favoured over Phillips, Whelan said: “No, no, no.
“Kalvin Phillips starts against Germany, 100 per cent.
“I think Phillips and Rice have both done enough in the first three games to keep their place in the side.
“When you think about it, defensively, we have been very sound. You cannot argue with three clean sheets from three games.
“It would be a big mistake to change somebody that has been so important in this tournament so far for England at this stage. It is such an important game.”
