Leeds United could sign next Joe Gelhardt after confirmed news - Whelan

Leeds United could lure more top talent to Elland Road off the back of Joe Gelhardt’s Golden Boy nomination, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking to Football Insider, the Whites ambassador said that the pathway from the academy to the first team “gives great hope for any young player coming through.”

The BBC confirmed (15 June) that Gelhardt, 20, was one of just ten Premier League players nominated for the Golden Boy award for young players.

Notable winners of the award include Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Erling Haaland.

Gelhardt moved to Elland Road from Wigan Athletic for £1million in August 2020.

When asked by Football Insider if Gelhardt’s development would attract other young stars to Leeds, Whelan said: “Absolutely.

“I think Leeds have to take a lot of credit. I think Wigan have to take a little bit of credit too, for the point that they brought him too.

“They recognised what a player he is and what a player he could be in the future and we didn’t waste any time in bringing that in and developing it even more.

“You look through the history of Leeds United and that pathway has always been there at the academy level.

“We’ve had some great players come through and they have forged fantastic careers for themselves.

“They’ve gone on and not just played for Leeds but had a career for 13 to 15 years, which gives great hope for any young player coming through, that you know there is a pathway there for them to forge that first team career that everyone’s looking for as a young player.
