Leeds United employee '100 per cent' sure on Joe Gelhardt after journalist's transfer claim

Noel Whelan wants Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt to be given “more game time” in the 2022-23 campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Whites ambassador said the 20-year-old has the “energy, enthusiasm and end product” that Jesse March’s side need at the top end of the pitch.

Gelhardt played a bit-part role for Leeds United in the 2021-22 campaign.

The Whites played the majority of the season without a recognised striker as Patrick Bamford struggled with injury.

Jesse March’s side have made three signings this summer but are yet to sign a striker.

According to Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross (20 June), there is “nothing concrete” on the club’s pursuit of a new centre-forward.

When asked by Football Insider if Gelhardt could step up and be a regular starter next season, Whelan said: “A lot will depend on how pre-season goes for Joe.

“Right now, you would have to say that he is going to get more game time than he got last year.

“I don’t think you can overlook what he did in a short space of time with the minutes that he had. We were under pressure in every game that he came into at the back end of the season. You could see that it didn’t phase him.

“He had moments of brilliance. You need players who can do that to win football matches. I think it would be naive to look past the ability that he has. He can win a game.

“I can see more game time. Would I like to see him get more game time? 100 per cent. He brings energy, enthusiasm and end product.”
