Kieran Maguire salutes moneyspinning Leeds update amid Elland Road development
A new pitch is being installed at Elland Road – and Leeds United will reap the rewards in the balance sheet as well as on the pitch.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Leeds Live reported on 6th June that the work had begun at Elland Road.
The state of the art turf will feature a new drainage system to replace the old one which is almost 30 years old.
Leeds struggled with their pitch in the winter and had to purchase a £300,000 temporary playing surface from Tottenham.
Maguire explained that this more permanent solution will pay for itself over time.
“This will work out for Leeds given where they want to go and what they want to do,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“They cover more distance than any other team in the Premier League. So what you want is to be playing on a billiard table and having a new state-of-the-art pitch will help them.
“If that’s the difference between finishing 8th and 7th and 7th gets you into European competition, then it more than pays for itself.
“Each individual place in the Premier League is worth £2m, so if it helps to convert one draw into a win then it’s well worth it. I think you’ve got to look at it from that perspective.
“Having facilities which allow athletes to focus on being athletes as opposed to thinking ‘Are we planting potatoes or turnips on the pitch this summer?’
“Also, if it stops one footballer from turning an ankle then again that’s fantastic.
“So we’ve got to focus on these intangibles that you can’t specifically put a price on but it’s all part of the facilities and having a holistic approach.”
