'Box office' Leeds United have rivals to thank amid money-spinning reveal - Kieran Maguire
Leeds United are loved and loathed by television viewers – that makes them a “box office” proposition for broadcasters.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Leeds revealed August’s TV schedule via their website on 18 June.
Two of the Whites’ first three league matches, against Man United and Burnley respectively, will be broadcast live.
This has become the natural order of things for Leeds who were found live on TV screens a whopping 24 times last season.
Maguire told this site on 13 June that had netted them an extra £14million on top of the basic TV deal fee.
The spreadsheet wiz claims that their popularity with broadcasters is due to their playing style, large fanbase and equally large rival base.

“Leeds are box office,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“Firstly, they play attractive football. Secondly, they have got a huge fanbase. Thirdly, quite a few fans in other clubs don’t like them, for whatever reason.
“That can actually have the knock-on effect of people tuning in to root against you.
“If I was a Sky or BT executive, I’d be getting Leeds on the television because of the quality of football they play and because of the impact they have on subscriber numbers.
“People will tune in to watch Leeds. It’s as simple as that.”
Leeds finished 9th in the Premier League last season.
Their first six fixtures for 2021-22 are against Man United, Everton, Burnley, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham.
