Whelan predicts Leeds could enter Abraham race after Athletic update

Leeds United could enter the race for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham if he becomes available on a loan deal.

That is according to ex-Leeds ace and boyhood fan Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Athletic reported the latest twist in the hunt for the 23-year-old’s signature.

It is claimed that West Ham will attempt to sign the striker on loan even after David Moyes ruled them out of the race upon hearing Chelsea’s £40million valuation.

This site revealed on 30 April that Leicester, Wolves and Aston Villa are all keen on securing the six-cap England man’s services.

And Whelan predicts that Leeds might be tempted into the race if they spy that a loan deal is on the cards.

“The whole picture has changed,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“On a loan, that would probably increase the chances of Leeds United wanting to delve in. Probably a lot of other clubs that didn’t want to fork out £40m, too.

“He would still be a Chelsea player and could go and bang 25 goals in next season on loan and then that could change their minds at Chelsea.

“So yes, absolutely. I think this would open a lot more opportunities.

“It takes half the wage bill if not more from what Chelsea are paying him.

“He needs to be playing in the Premier League week in, week out. He might go out there and do what Jesse Lingard’s done and prove a point.”

Football Insider understands that Villa are the current frontrunners to sign Abraham.

They have set aside £40m for a potential swoop.
