Leeds United news: Agbonlahor tips Aston Villa to complete ‘immense’ Kalvin Phillips signing after update

Kalvin Phillips would be an “immense signing” for Aston Villa and they should hold out for him this summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Phillips will be more convinced by the project under Steven Gerrard than at Leeds United.

The Times reported on Sunday (20 March) Villa are now the frontrunners to sign the 26-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.

The same outlet reported on Tuesday (22 March) Leeds are now prepared to offer him a new bumper contract to fend off interest from the Midlands giants.

Football Insider reported on Monday (21 March) West Ham are also preparing a fresh approach for Phillips, who is valued by the Whites at between £60million-£70million.

“Gerrard will know when the transfer window opens, there are players he has to get rid of,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He will look at Douglas Luiz who can do a job as a squad player but will not be the one starting in that position when everyone’s fit. Nakamba would be a better option.

“If Villa can get Bissouma in that midfield, that’s what Villa are missing, someone who can get the ball back and someone who can dictate play as well. He would be lovely in there with McGinn and Ramsey.

“But if Kalvin Phillips is available you hold out for him rather than Bissouma. I like Bissouma but Phillips has been outstanding for Leeds since he broke into the side, outstanding for England, especially at the Euros.

“I think he would be an immense signing and I’m sure Steven Gerrard would love to get that over the line.

“He will look at the project of Aston Villa and see it as more exciting than the Leeds project at the moment.”
