Campbell: Leeds will regret losing Alioski after £5m+ new deal talks

Ezgjan Alioski’s versatility has proved useful for Leeds United and they “will regret” losing him if he does not agree to a proposed new contract.

That is according to former Premier League star Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the North Macedonian started his 15th match in succession for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the 2-1 loss to Everton last night.

The 28-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer and, as revealed by Football Insider on 10 December, he has held talks with the club over a long-term extension worth £5million-plus.

There have been reports tentatively linking him with a pre-contract move to Galatasaray, as per the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Alioski can play anywhere on the left-hand side and has often been deployed on the right flank too.

There have even been times throughout his career when he has been asked to fill in as a centre-forward or central-midfielder, and his versatility is one of the main reasons that Leeds would be wise to tie him down, says Campbell.

He told Football Insider: “He is playing and doing a decent job but it’s not really his position, is it? He’s not really a specialised left-back, although he can play there.

“I think there’s a contract on the table. It’s probably a take it or leave it kind of deal.

“He’s just got to keep playing and improving himself and I’m sure there will be teams interested in him because he’s versatile.

“It may be one that Leeds will regret if they do let him go.”

Alioski has been a Leeds player since 2017 and has scored 22 goals in his time at Elland Road.

The player revealed to the BBC in December he would “love to stay” at Leeds.

He is a 39-time international and will represent his country at this summer’s European Championship.
