‘Leeds United ready to take points deduction’ after £150m reveal

Leeds United are readying their assault on the transfer window after securing their return to the Premier League as champions of the second tier.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (5 May) that Leeds have set their sights on 10 new signings when the window opens next month.

The Whites will have a budget of £150million to spend on transfer fees and wages for the 2025-26 campaign.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has told the BBC (4 May): “Together we are going to build the best squad we can, with every penny we are allowed to spend to be competitive in the Premier League.”

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Yorkshire giants could follow Nottingham Forest and go even further.

Leeds could overspend under PSR rules this summer, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Leeds could overspend in the 2025-26 campaign and take the risk of a potential points deduction for the following season.

Forest blazed that trail in the 2022-23 campaign and were deducted four points.

Premier League clubs are only allowed to lose £105million over three years under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – with that figure dropping substantially for every past season spent in the Championship.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The promotion leaves Marathe and Leeds with an option.

“They could take the risk and spend as Nottingham Forest did, and take the points deduction.

“I’ve got a feeling that they will back Farke all the way.

“He wasn’t backed properly when he came up with Norwich before.

“They’ll have to assess how many in his squad are Championship players, and how many he thinks can make the step.

“I think they’ll back him. I think they’ll take the chance on a points deduction, and maybe that’s the jeopardy you’ve got to look at these days.

“They’ve got the resources and it’s so hard to get this chance at the Premier League, why waste it by planning for relegation again?

“It’s got to be brave.”

Leeds have serious Joel Piroe questions

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (6 May) that Leeds will not build their attack around Championship top scorer Joel Piroe in the Premier League.

He scored the second-tier’s most goals in the 2024-25 campaign with 19.

However, it is believed Leeds have question marks over Piroe’s ability to make the step up and will not count on him as their first-choice striker next season.
