‘Leeds United’s new signing is underwhelming – I’ll be surprised if he gets 10 goals’

Leeds United have kicked off their summer business ahead of their return to the Premier League in August.

The Whites have wrapped up a free transfer deal for Lukas Nmecha with his contract at Wolfsburg set to expire at the end of this month.

Nmecha, 26, joins the likes of Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford in the striking ranks at Leeds as they target top-flight survival next season.

The Elland Road club will face Everton, Arsenal and Newcastle in their first three competitive fixtures of the 2025-26 campaign.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted Leeds have made an “underwhelming” start to the window.

Wyness slams ‘underwhelming’ business at Leeds

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he cannot see Nmecha providing a consistent source of goals at Leeds.

The Man City academy product scored 19 goals in 85 games for Wolfsburg between 2021 and 2025.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve got to say I was underwhelmed. I’ll be surprised if he gets more than 10 goals this season.

“I don’t think he’s the main striker they’re looking for. He’s a player that has flattered to deceive. I mean, he’s been on loan at Anderlecht, Preston, but he’s also played Champions League.

“But I don’t see him being consistent and he hasn’t really turned it on wherever he’s been in terms of a lot of goals.

“I don’t know if Daniel Farke will see him as the main striker, he’s got Bamford still who’s got his sick note issues.

“It’s not what I was hoping from Leeds in terms of moving forward.”

Aston Villa ace ‘interested’ in Leeds move

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Saturday (14 June) that Alex Moreno is “interested” in joining Leeds United in the summer transfer window as he eyes a move away from Aston Villa.

Leeds are aiming to bring in a new left-back as they look set to lose Junior Firpo, and are considering a move to sign the Spaniard for a cut-price fee.

Moreno spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and is not expected to be part of Unai Emery’s first-team plans upon his return to Villa Park.
