Leeds plot £2.5m swoop for in-demand international midfielder – report
Leeds are plotting a move for 23-year-old Hibernian midfielder John McGinn, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claim that Paul Heckingbottom thinks he would be an ideal addition to his squad, but it is claimed that he might have to get rid of a player first.
The midfielder, who moved from St Mirren in 2015, has one year left on his contract and was a vital player for Hibs last season, scoring five goals and adding four assists in 30 Premiership games.
Hibs are said to want £5million for him while Leeds value him at £2.5million.
Celtic and Rangers are also said to be interested in the player, who could become the subject of a three-way battle in the summer.
Talking about the interest from both Rangers and Celtic McGinn said: “The Celtic one’s always been something I’ve been linked with because of the relations I have – my granddad was the chairman there.
“They’re both massive clubs but at the same time, it’s not for me to comment on.
Football Insider verdict:
It’s no surprise that these three clubs are in for one of the most promising box-to-box midfielders in the Premiership. Who would come out on top if all three clubs step up their interest? McGinn talks specifically about Celtic and there’s no getting round his family ties to the club. If he had to pick one he’d probably pick Celtic. However, it’s unlikely to be up to him. Which club will make the first big move? Paul Heckingbottom’s time at Leeds could be up this summer and if he does get sacked then their interest in McGinn could fizzle out. Steven Gerrard will be taking over the reigns at Ibrox so we might not hear any more from Rangers until then. We’re fairly sure about one thing though – neither of the three clubs are likely to get him for £2.5million and his price tag could be the deciding factor for this move. With one year left on his contract, Hibs may be forced to cash in though and that could mean that this one is set to be a protracted affair that rumbles on deep into the summer.
