Leicester have broken the rules – points deduction now on the way, says Kieran Maguire

Leicester City have breached Profit and Sustainability Rules by £25-30million based on calculations from their 2022-23 accounts.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the severity of Leicester’s financial breaches.

Leicester published their 2022-23 accounts on Tuesday (2 April) revealing that they lost a total of £90million last season despite making a profit of £74million from player sales.

They have been charged with a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules for exceeding their allowable losses and could face a points deduction if they return to the top flight next season.

Maguire revealed that his own calculations suggest that the Foxes overspent by as much as £30million last season.

Leicester points deduction on the cards after £25m+ breach

Everton were given a six-point deduction for their £19.5million overspend while Forest were deducted four points for a £34.5million overspend.

We don’t have the full details in terms of what’s allowable for the academy and women’s team and so on,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But based on my figures and calculations, I think that Leicester are in the region of £25 to £30 million over the PSR limit.

What that would mean in terms of a points deduction should they return to the Premier League is unknown.

Leicester will argue that because they’re not presently in the Premier League, they shouldn’t be subject to a deduction.

I think from a legal point of view, it will be a fascinating commission hearing, assuming that it takes place.
