Leicester ‘want Graham Potter after Steve Cooper sack’ as Van Nistelrooy linked

Leicester City are keen to speak to Graham Potter about the vacant managerial role at the King Power Stadium, the Daily Mail have reported.

The Foxes are looking for a new manager after sacking Steve Cooper on Sunday night (24 November) with the club 16th in the Premier League table, one point clear of the relegation zone, following the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, having seemingly lost the dressing room.

It is thought that they now want to turn back to Potter about taking over the role, having targeted him on two previous occasions.

Football Insider reported earlier this month that the 49-year-old – who has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in April last year – was waiting to hear from Leicester about a managerial vacancy so there should be interest on both sides.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is also thought to be someone who could put his name into contention to take over at Leicester after leaving Man United following his successful spell in interim charge at Old Trafford.

The hierarchy at The King Power Stadium are apparently keen to have a new manager in place before they travel to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Graham Potter could be a solid Steve Cooper replacement for Leicester

Football Insider Opinion

A move to put Potter in charge of first-team affairs could be a sensible one for the decision-makers at the club.

The 49-year-old did admittedly struggle at Chelsea, but it was a very difficult time to manage at Stamford Bridge and plenty of others have also found things tough in that role, even if Enzo Maresca is apparently finding his feet since leaving the King Power.

He also previously excelled at a club with lower expectations in the form of Brighton, so he could be a good fit for Leicester.

Indeed, the fact he knows how to get results in the Premier League could be vital, as the Foxes look to avoid relegation this season.

It is likely he would be seen as a solid appointment by many, which may satisfy fans of the club, especially given they never really fully took to Cooper himself.

Van Nistelrooy did a decent job with Man United, and should know the club having played them twice during that spell. His relative lack of managerial experience in this league could be a concern though.

With that in mind, if Leicester can make it third time lucky with their pursuit of Potter, it could prove significant when it comes to their efforts to stay up.
