Baines delivers verdict on Everton emerging star, claims he is unbelievable

By Will Butcher

Leighton Baines has described Everton academy product Tom Davies as a “great player” after he scored against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 18-year-old won the man of the match award after scoring the Toffees’ third with a wonderful chip in their 4-0 win against Pep Guardiola’s side at Goodison Park.

Speaking to Everton’s official website, Baines described Davies’ temperament as “unbelievable” after the midfielder made his 10th appearance for the blue half of Merseyside.

“He’s a lovely kid, a great player and he’s Everton, he’s one of the ones we’ll all get behind,” Baines said. “But he’s been top drawer, his temperament is unbelievable.

“I see him working hard, I see him doing all the right things, we’ll come off the field and he’ll be in the gym, he’s got good support around him, but he deserves all the plaudits.”

Keeping new £24million signing Morgan Schneiderlin out of the starting eleven, Davies started alongside veteran Gareth Barry in the middle of the park.

Although Ronald Koeman’s side forced to wait for their chance on the ball by City, they utilised the counter attack to the best of their ability with four well-taken goals.

Wearing the number 26 shirt, Davies was the architect of the first goal as he slid Ross Barkley in who squared to Romelu Lukaku. Kevin Mirallas then doubled the lead just after half time.

Barkley turned provider for a second time by passing to Davies, who chipped an on rushing Claudio Bravo to make it three.

There was still time for more, as £11million signing Ademola Lookman smashed home a fourth from close range after a mistake at the back.

Davies is now expected to feature against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Selhurst Park, which could see Schneiderlin be forced to wait for his first start.

In other Everton news, Harry Redknapp has also had this to say about Davies.
