BBC pundit claims about Rangers attacker are utterly ridiculous

BBC Scotland pundit Steven Thompson has claimed people need to “get real” and “contextualise” Josh Windass’ goal-scoring form after being widely praised for scoring 14 times in his last 18 games.
The former Rangers star has questioned who Windass has scored against and used the example of his goals against lower league sides Ayr United and Fraserburgh to presumably add some context.
“He’s scored nine goals in the last five games, but let’s get real – three against Fraserburgh, three against Hamilton, who are conceding more goals than anybody just now, Ayr United, a team two divisions below them”, Thompson said on BBC Scotland Sportscene Extra on Facebook.
“So when you add the games up, great he’s scored a lot of goals, but is he scoring against Hearts, who are impervious, is he scoring against Celtic?
“Just contextualise it.”
The only problem there is, it doesn’t add any context whatsoever.
Since Graeme Murty’s appointment as manager in October, Windass has scored 14 times in 18 games – scoring in exactly half of those – to become arguably the form player in Britain over the last few months and has scored in games against Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen as well as assisting against Aberdeen and Hibs.
Of course, Windass has scored against lesser teams but like any striker anywhere in the world, he can only score against what is infront of him – and there is little doubt that the 24-year-old is doing that.
In the league alone, only Kris Boyd and Alfredo Morelos have scored more than Windass this season while Ibrox team-mate Daniel Candeias is the only player in the Scottish Premiership has created more goals.
Twelve months ago, Windass was struggling to make an impact at Ibrox after his summer move from Accrington Stanley but is now comfortably in the top few players in the league.
The context of Windass’ performances is there – and he’s been far from outstanding in every game despite scoring regularly – which makes the praise being lavished on the 24-year-old all the more deserved.
