'Get real', 'Carried away' - BBC pundit slams praise for Rangers 24-year-old
BBC Sport Scotland pundit Steven Thompson has insisted people need to “get real” over the praise aimed at Rangers attacker Josh Windass after the 24-year-old scored his 14th goal in 18 games with a hat-trick against Hamilton on Sunday.
Windass has been in spectacular goal-scoring form since Graeme Murty succeeded Pedro Caixinha as Gers manager in October and has rocketed to third in the Scottish Premiership scoring charts.
The 24-year-old has emerged as a huge part of Murty’s side with the former Accrington star taking a big chunk of the responsibility for scoring goals from Colombian Alfredo Morelos.
Thompson thinks given who Windass has scored against, fans and pundits need to “contextualise” his achievements.
“He’s scored nine goals in the last five games, but let’s get real – three against Fraserburgh, three against Hamilton, who are conceding more goals than anybody just now, Ayr United, a team two divisions below them,” Thompson said on BBC Scotland Sportscene Extra on Facebook.
“So when you add the games up, great he’s scored a lot of goals, but is he scoring against Hearts, who are impervious, is he scoring against Celtic?
“Just contextualise it.
“People are getting carried away. He’s doing well.”
Windass joined the Gers in 2016 alongside Matt Crooks in a £120,000 double deal but struggled to make an impact in his debut season at Ibrox.
After being moved into a more attacking position this season, Windass has been far more effective and is starting to live up to the hype that followed his signing.
Windass has scored 15 times in 31 appearances this season and chipped in with a further 8 assists to help the Gers to second in the Scottish Premiership.
The attacker attracted bids from English Championship clubs in the January transfer window which failed to meet the Gers’ valuation of the 24-year-old before signing a new Ibrox deal last week. to tie him to the Light Blues until 2021.
