Insider makes 'concerned' Tottenham claim after Levy reportedly tries to block Newcastle takeover

Tottenham chief Daniel Levy can’t say he had no idea the Newcastle takeover would go through after an 18-month battle.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On 8 October, The Guardian reported the other 19 Premier League clubs have demanded an emergency meeting with league chiefs.

It was claimed the clubs want to know why the deal was waved through so quickly and why they received little notice.

Mail Online also claim Levy has tried to stop Newcastle from signing lucrative new sponsors as Tottenham lobbied the league against the deal.

The Newcastle takeover started in the summer of 2020 when it looked like the deal was all but done.

After several legal issues, the deal was finally confirmed last week, sparking wild scenes of celebration on Tyneside.

Wenham insists Levy can’t have been surprised that the takeover went through after an 18-month battle.

“Levy has to protect his own interest,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The story that came out claimed the clubs had been caught unaware by the takeover going through.

“We saw Richard Masters talk about it last summer. Anyone saying they were caught off guard by that, I’m sorry, no way.

“It’s a bold statement. These sorts of things don’t come out of nowhere.

“Club will naturally be concerned by the takeover by someone whose wealth dwarfs that of Manchester City.

“But Newcastle won’t be a threat to Tottenham for a long time yet.”

Newcastle and Tottenham face each other in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Magpies are yet to win in any competition this season.
