Lewis Miley’s contract situation examined as Newcastle United open new talks

Lewis Miley has emerged as one of Newcastle United‘s most promising and exciting youngsters during the 2025-26 campaign.

The 19-year-old, however, has been sidelined since the end of January with a knee injury. Before that, Eddie Howe had moved the talented midfielder into a full-back role to cover for other injuries.

Even in a midfield of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, Miley has managed to hold his own, racking up 30 appearances across all competitions in what has been a proper breakthrough season for him.

Newcastle will be forging transfer plans ahead of the summer, and the only news involving their academy graduate appears to be handing him a new contract, with negotiations now open at St James’ Park.

Lewis Miley deserves to be rewarded for his form at Newcastle

At 19 years of age, Miley has already cemented himself as a first-team regular, while Alex Murphy, 21, and Sean Neave, 18, are being given a taste of the senior set-up by Howe.

He last signed a long-term contract in January 2024, and while the club never officially announced the length of the deal, it is believed to run until the summer of 2029.

That would make him one of the players with the longest-running contracts at St James’ Park, though he would appear to be one of the lowest-paid players at a reported £30,000-a-week.

To put that into context, Guimaraes is one of the club’s highest-paid players on a reported £160,000-a-week, so this new contract could move Miley up the list to match his importance this season.

Eddie Howe has already made up his mind on a new contract

Howe has clearly been impressed by the youngster, throwing him into any lineup, including a Champions League clash against PSG, before he got injured in January.

Football Insider understands that Howe will block any offers for the Newcastle gem, with his decision being confirmed following the 2-2 draw against Chelsea back in December.

Just two games into his position change to full-back, Miley completely silenced Alejandro Garnacho and Marc Cucurella, ending the game with one tackle, three clearances and nine recoveries [FotMob].

Everyone at St James’ Park has fallen in love with the academy product, so securing his signature on a brand-new contract only seems like the right decision for all parties.
