Liverpool and Chelsea stars react to Solly March after Brighton beat Newcastle

Brighton winger Solly March posted a message on social media after a heated 2-1 win over Newcastle in the FA Cup.

The 30-year-old winger was brought on to replace Chelsea target Kaoru Mitoma at the beginning of extra-time, and impressed up against Tino Livramento.

Liverpool target Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a penalty, following a needless foul from Yankuba Minteh.

The Gambian winger would atone for his error moments before half-time, as Joao Pedro played an inch-perfect through ball and the former Magpie slotted past Martin Dubravka.

The second-half became a feisty affair, as Anthony Gordon was shown a red card by Anthony Taylor for a shove on Jan Paul van Hecke.

Brighton then lost their man-advantage when Tariq Lamptey was given a second yellow card for a foul in the 91st minute.

Diego Gomez was fortunate not to be sent off, with the Paraguayan escaping punishment for a reckless challenge late on.

However, the Ghanaian’s absence mattered little, as substitute Danny Welbeck scored the match winner in the 114th minute to send the Seagulls through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Former teammates show support for Brighton winger Solly March

Brighton’s win over Newcastle saw March feature in only his fifth game this season.

The one-club-man made his first appearance for the Seagulls in 2013 when they were still in the Championship, and the former England U21 international has been a crucial part of the team’s success over the last decade.

However, due to a series of injury setbacks, March has only featured 15 times in all competitions over the last two seasons for his boyhood club.

Following the win over Newcastle, the winger posted a series of photos of himself in action on Instagram, captioned: “What a win, what a week!”

March’s former teammates, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, and Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo both showed their support for the Brighton man by liking the post.

Liverpool rue Plymouth loss as rivals knocked out of FA Cup

Football Insider Verdict

Liverpool and Alexis Mac Allister will be frustrated to have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Plymouth.

The Reds have already done a league-double over Man City, who are the second highest placed side left remaining, behind Nottingham Forest.

2024/25 FA Cup quarter-final draw
Bournemouth vs Man City
Brighton vs Nottingham Forest/Ipswich Town
Fulham vs Crystal Palace
Preston North End vs Aston Villa

Man United, who proved tricky opposition when the two clubs met in January, lost to Fulham, while Arsenal themselves were eliminated by the Red Devils.

Whilst the Merseyside club would no doubt prefer to win the Champions League, or Premier League (or both), seeing the calibre of competition on offer, and missing out on a potential quadruple will hurt.

The Reds will instead prepare themselves for a Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on 16 March, and the Magpies will be without suspended Anthony Gordon for his red card against Brighton.
