Liverpool backed to sign ‘next Steven Gerrard’ as £80m+ bid revealed – pundit

Alan Hutton has told Liverpool to sign Federico Valverde from Real Madrid “now”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said Valverde is an “outstanding” player who could help solve Jurgen Klopp’s midfield problems.

According to Diario AS (13 September), the Reds reportedly made a bid of £86.5million for the 24-year-old in the final two days of the transfer window, but Real rejected the offer.

The Uruguay international currently has five years left on his contract at the Bernabeu.

In an interview with Spanish outlet Marca (1 October), Luis Suarez said his international teammate reminded him of Steven Gerrard.

Suarez said Valverde has made “great progress” in the time that he has known him.

When asked if the midfielder would be a good fit for Liverpool, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think so.

I think he’s an outstanding player. I’ve seen him a few times for Real Madrid and he brings a lot of attributes to that midfield. Not only that, I think he can play higher up the pitch as well. So I get the comparison.

It is definitely an area of the pitch where Liverpool need work over the next year or so. Defensively as a unit and in midfield they are struggling so he is definitely someone that could help them now, never mind in the future.
