Liverpool have made some big name signings in January in the past and as the 2017 window draws near, Football Insider puts together the best possible XI from former buys.
Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ward all make the starting XI.
Striker Sturridge was sensational during the 2013-14 season and remains one of the club’s best players and he is joined in attack by legends Robbie Fowler and Luis Suarez.
In January 2006 Fowler returned to Liverpool following a spell at Manchester City but he was already a club legend and had adopted the nickname “God” following an incredible record of 171 goals in 339 appearances. He added a further 12 goals in the following 18 months.
Fowler was fantastic but the third forward Suarez was even better. The Barcelona striker was sold for a record-breaking £80 million fee in 2014 and has been missed ever since.
Ward is currently on loan at Huddersfield but he has been with the club for four years and has shown great promise as an academy keeper.
In front of Ward sits a pair which formed a terrific centre-back partnership under Rafa Benitez and Kenny Dalglish. Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel were at the heart of Liverpool’s defence until the Dane left in 2014 after falling out of favour due to injury setbacks.
The duo are joined in a back three by Alvaro Arbeloa who is a terrific player, though his Liverpool career was spent largely in the treatment room.
In midfield there are some quality Liverpool stars. Coutinho is arguably one of the best signings the club has ever made and he joined in January 2012 for just £7million.
He’s joined by Maxi Rodriguez and Jordon Ibe on the wings, while another star Javier Mascherano partners Coutinho in the centre of midfield.
In other Liverpool news, these are the three worst January transfers for the club.
