Liverpool brief media over Arne Slot as FSG’s real plan revealed

Liverpool are advancing in their talks to make Arne Slot their new manager – but a deal is not quite done yet, sources have told Football Insider

The FSG-led club briefed the media earlier this week over the talks surrounding Slot replacing the outgoing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield as they wanted to gauge supporters’ reactions before making a final decision.

Football Insider revealed on 24 April that the club will have to pay Feyenoord about £10million in compensation to sanction a deal for their manager.

The Rotterdam-based side don’t want to lose the Dutchman, but they are facing an uphill battle to keep him and won’t stand in his way if their compensation demands are met.

The 45-year-old is increasingly likely to take over on Merseyside as negotiations continue to progress.

Liverpool look set to appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp successor

Slot confirmed his interest in the job to ESPN before Feyenoord’s 3-1 league victory on Thursday against Go Ahead Eagles.

“It seems clear to me that I would like to work there,” Slot said. “All I can say about it is that the clubs are in negotiations. I’m in the waiting room.”

He added that he was “confident” Liverpool and Feyenoord would be able to reach an agreement.

The Feyenoord boss has been praised for the job he’s done in Rotterdam, with his side claiming the Dutch Cup on 21 April.

They currently sit second in the table behind PSV Eindhoven after lifting the Eredivisie trophy last season.

The Dutchman’s impressive 61.1 per cent win rate as a manager has seen him linked with top jobs across Europe in recent times, with the Reds the latest side to register their interest in him.

Michael Edwards has returned to the club this summer as CEO of Football and he will be working closely with the new manager.

It will be a daunting task for whoever takes over from Klopp in the Anfield dugout, with Slot now finding himself well-placed to make the switch to Merseyside.
