Liverpool “cannot afford” to finish outside the Champions League spots this season, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side must finish in the top four because of players’ wages and the aspirations of individuals in the squad.

Football Insider’s finance expert Kieran Maguire says Liverpool could lose out on up to £150million if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently three points off fourth-placed West Ham with a game in hand, while Chelsea are two points ahead of them in fifth.

When asked how damaging missing out on the top four could be for Liverpool, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: Liverpool are built to be in the Champions League.

“They need to be challenging for the top honours in football.

“Liverpool are a top club and it has taken them a while to get back to where they needed to be but Klopp got them there.

“Klopp will fight tooth and nail to get back in that Champions League, it’s so important. Liverpool cannot afford to be out of the Champions League in a sense.

“The players they have got, the way the club is built, the wages they need to pay, they need to be in the Champions League. Some players need to step up now to get them back in there. You can see how important it is financially.”
