Liverpool close in on late double deal – sources

Liverpool are looking to sign a centre-back and a defensive midfielder before the transfer window shuts, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Reds want a “versatile defender” to join the club.

That has surprised some sources considering the club are aiming to sell Joe Gomez, who has the ability to play all across the back line.

The Reds sold Sepp van den Berg to Brentford this week, and Arne Slot wants to bring in a central defender to replace him to provide depth.

The Premier League giants are also targeting a number six, with Slot actively wanting the club to make a new signing in this area of the pitch.

It has been a quiet transfer window at Anfield, with Liverpool only just looking set to complete their first deal by signing Giorgi Mamardahvili.

Freshening up the squad and adding some more quality is an aim for Liverpool in the final days of the transfer window.

Football Insider revealed the Reds are plotting a late-window move for Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to provide a marquee signing after missing out on several players this summer.

Liverpool thought they had signed Martin Zubimendi earlier in the window, but the planned move fell through at the last minute.

Liverpool

Football Insider reported that Liverpool have been “besieged” with loan offers for Stefan Bajcetic this summer.

However, the club are hesitant to allow the 19-year-old to leave Anfield unless they sign a new number six.
