Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that the Reds need to find better attacking options, as the current front three aren’t out-and-out goal scorers.
The former league winner has stated that even the likes of Mo Salah, who is in contention to win this year’s Premier League ‘golden boot’ award is not going to be consistent enough.
Speaking in an interview, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, the former England international stated that Liverpool need more all-round players.
“The front-three are great, but I don’t feel that they are necessarily going to continue to do this for the next two or three years.
“They need better all-round players.”
Liverpool’s most recent flash of success was smashing FC Porto 5-0 in the Champions League, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Salah all getting on the score sheet, bringing their combined tally on the season up to 63.
However, these goal-scoring antics are not enough to convince Barnes that this three are the future of Liverpool’s attack.
“Salah is not a centre forward, I don’t think he is a player who can score goals consistently over a period of time. We don’t have players like that.
“We have players like Salah and Mane and, although Mane scored a hat-trick against Porto, they are not out-and-out goalscorers.”
Mane’s hat-trick brings his tally up to 12 for the season, whilst Firmino has 21. Yet the most impressive has been the addition of Salah, who has netted an impressive 30 goals during his debut campaign.
Yet this is not enough to impress the former Liverpool star, who thinks that the Reds need to buy more individual players to help the balance of the team.
“Yes, we’re scoring lots of goals but can we see Mane and Salah continuing to score this amount of goals on a regular basis?
