Liverpool coaches ‘thrilled’ by Darwin Nunez development – sources
Liverpool coaches have been thrilled with striker Darwin Nunez’s development in recent months, sources have told Football Insider.
Jurgen Klopp and his backroom staff are convinced the 24-year-old will now be one of the key players in the three-way race for the Premier League title this season.
Nunez is an injury doubt for Wednesday’s (21 February) clash with Luton after coming off injured in the win over Brentford last week.
However, he is expected to return to full fitness soon and could go on to play a crucial part in the fight for the league title.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that his pace, power and movement is regarded as “next level” by the coaching staff at Anfield.
One area of Nunez’s game that has particularly impressed them is his selflessness, both in terms of running the channels and setting up chances for better-placed teammates.
Darwin Nunez is Liverpool’s title secret weapon – even Man City are scared
Sources say coaches believe his finishing – which has been heavily criticised by fans and pundits alike since his arrival in England on the back of a string of embarrassing misses – will only continue to improve as he gains more experience and learns to become calmer in front of goal and vary his finishing.
Nunez scored his 13th goal of the 2023-24 campaign with aplomb in the 4-1 win over Brentford on Saturday (17 February) and has also contributed 11 assists.
The Uruguay international is becoming the first-choice striker for Jurgen Klopp after spells out of the side since his arrival in 2022.
He managed 15 goals and four assists last term – his first season in English football.
Liverpool paid Benfica a reported fee of £85million including add-ons to land Nunez two years ago amid strong competition from Man United.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sit top of the Premier League by one point ahead of the home clash against Luton.
Nunez could return to the Reds side for Sunday’s (25 February) League Cup final against Chelsea.
