Liverpool could sign 'world-class' player Gerrard wanted at Anfield in 2014 - pundit

Kevin Campbell has lauded the “world-class” Toni Kroos as Liverpool are linked with a £20million move for the Real Madrid midfielder.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker is adamant the Reds should be setting their sights on a midfielder younger in profile than the 31-year-old.

Spanish newspaper El Nacional claimed on 13th October that Liverpool are targeting a £20million move for the Germany international.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is said to be a big admirer of his countryman.

Kroos’ contract at Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2023.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the transfer report, Campbell: “Listen, Kroos is a great player.

“He is world-class, make no mistake about it. He has got it all. A player that can score goals, can pass, has vision and an engine. I cannot see it happening though.

“It really doesn’t make sense to me when you factor in his age. Liverpool need younger legs in there. They need players that are coming through.

“There is a lot of talk about Liverpool needing a midfielder but they have got so many already. It doesn’t make sense.

“I can’t see them signing Kroos, especially with Thiago [Alcantara] already there.”

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (April 4th), club legend Steven Gerrard revealed how he tried to persuade Kroos to sign for Liverpool in 2014.

He wrote in his book: “Brendan asked me to take a crack at trying to talk Toni Kroos into signing for Liverpool.

“We both admired Kroos immensely.”
