Liverpool expected to offer Naby Keita one-year deal amid confirmed news – Robinson

Liverpool could offer Naby Keita a one-year contract extension to avoid a repeat of Georginio Wijnaldum’s exit in 2021.

That is the view of former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Keita’s future on Merseyside.

The Guinea international has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield.

Sources told Football Insider on 10 June that the club had opened talks with the player’s representatives over a new deal.

However, Keita has failed to feature since then because of injury.

Speaking to club media (2 September), Jurgen Klopp revealed the centre-midfielder will be “out for a while”.

When asked by Football Insider if repeated injuries may dissuade the Reds from offering Keita a new deal, Robinson said: “A lot will depend on his injury record this season.

“I don’t think a year extension is out of the question. He was good for the majority of last season.

“They let Wijnaldum leave too quickly and that did not work out from the club or player’s point of view. I imagine they regret not giving him that contract extension.

“If they can get Keita back fit and back in the team it might be worth giving him another year just to see if he can prove his fitness.

“It is an area that Liverpool are light in. They need a few bodies in that area. They already need another two and that’s without losing Keita.”
