‘Liverpool fans force FSG U-turn in major win’ – boardroom source

Liverpool fans continue to clash with the club’s Fenway Sports Group (FSG) ownership despite their success on the pitch this season.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League by eight points and are one of the favourites for success in the Champions League this season.

However, supporters have vented their frustration with FSG over ticket price hikes and a perceived lack of investment in the squad – with only one senior signing arriving across both windows this season.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on a major win for the Liverpool fans over the American ownership.

FSG ‘will have been pushing for higher prices’ at Liverpool, says Wyness

Liverpool confirmed a U-turn on their policy of increasing ticket prices on Monday (17 February), revealing that they will freeze general admission and season ticket prices for the 2025-26 season.

The club had increased prices by 2% ahead of the current campaign.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted it was the good work of fan groups and supporter protests which has forced the decision.

The Reds’ statement said the “price freeze comes despite significant increases in Anfield matchday operating costs and continued rises in the cost of football operations in general”.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The Spirit of Shankly, a fan group, have been very effective.

“It’s been a number of seasons now that they’ve been in contact with Fenway about stopping price hikes.

“They’ve been very effective on that.

“It’s something all the clubs have to look at. Coming back to Man United, we know they’ve hiked tickets to £66 – that has caused unrest.

“I’m not surprised Liverpool have done this, the fans are a very effective lobbying group – other clubs don’t have quite as effective fanbases.

“Then again, most clubs have been very reasonable. Fulham are a club who do have problems with the cost of their tickets.

“Everton, I think, have actually priced tickets too low. Even a lot of the fans have said the same thing.

“Fenway will have been pushing for higher prices, but you’ve got to believe that fans have a major role to play in the spectacle of the Premier League.

“Ticketing can’t be thought of as a major revenue stream as a lot of the American owners think it is.”

Jota headed for Liverpool exit?

Meanwhile on the pitch, Football Insider has revealed (19 February) Liverpool striker Diogo Jota does not fit into the long-term plans of manager Arne Slot.

The 28-year-old is a top target for Saudi Pro League clubs, while Arsenal have also been credited with an interest.

Sources have previously told Football Insider (10 February) that Liverpool are growing frustrated with the ex-Wolves man due to his injury record at Anfield.
