Liverpool fans react as Klopp forced to omit key man v Man United
By Amir Mir
Joel Matip has been withdrawn from the Liverpool squad that takes on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon – and fans on Twitter are devastated.
The club confirmed on their official website that the key centre-back has been withdrawn as the “club continues to seek clarity from FIFA as to the player’s eligibility”.
This is in regards to the uncertainty about his international clearance after he was named in Cameron’s preliminary squad for the Africa Cup of Nations which is already under way.
Matip did state that he did not want to play in the tournament, but the Merseyside club are looking to seek “clarity” from FIFA in regards to his selection – he has not played for his home country since September 2015.
Jurgen Klopp’s side take on their north-west in the Premier League in what is expected to be an important match in the title race.

Therefore, it is no surprise that supporters on social media were annoyed that one of their key players will be missing because of a stupid FIFA rule.
Fans believe the club’s summer signing will be a huge miss during the fixture as Klopp’s side look to close the eight-point gap on leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
#LFC not able to play Matip due to lack of FIFA clarity over his eligibility after not going to the African Cup of Nationals. Incredible.

So no Matip, Clyne nor Coutinho? Could have been a decent win with them starting. Not much confidence now….. #LFC

So Matip is not available for selection because he hasn't got clearance from FIFA that's a big loss for us #LFC

Matip has played 12 league games for the Reds this season, scoring one goal, with his last appearance coming during the 2-2 draw against West Ham in early December – injury has ruled him out of recent matches.
