Michael Owen predicts Liverpool v Manchester United

By Alex Stevens

BT Sport pundit and former Liverpool and United player Michael Owen predicts goals in today’s bumper Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The clash between the two sides is always one of the most anticipated in the Premier League, and Owen believes the honours will be shared on Sunday in a thrilling score draw.

“Liverpool have lost 11 of their last 14 PL visits to OT,” Owen said in his column for betting firm BetVictor, “but I think we will see a different Reds side to the one who lost at St Mary’s earlier in the week.

“I hope and expect to see goals, tackles and everything you would wish to see from these two great clubs, but when the dust has settled perhaps their fellow title challengers will be the only winners from the game.”

As Owen pointed out, Liverpool’s record at Old Trafford is wretched, but they are undefeated in their last three games against Man United.

Their last Premier League outing was a hugely anti-climactic 0-0 draw at Anfield last October, but Liverpool beat United over two legs in the Europa League last season, beating their rivals 2-0 at Anfield and drawing 1-1 at Old Trafford.

Liverpool aren’t in the best of form though, without a win in 2017 after losing to Southampton in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday, after two draws against Sunderland in the Premier League and Plymouth in the FA Cup.

However, prior to that they had won three Premier league games in a row, including impressive victories against Man City and away at Everton.

Liverpool have their talisman Philippe Coutinho available for selection after returning for the Reds in midweek.

Man United are hoping that their star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be available after missing the last match with illness.

Wayne Rooney is one goal away from beating Bobby Charlton’s all-time scoring record for United and would love to do it against his bitter rivals.

Liverpool fans will be desperately hoping that their defence can keep him at bay, and record a much-needed win to lift them back up to second in the league.
