Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Wijnaldum display v Southampton
By Dominic Toner
Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum played 61 minutes in the defeat against Southampton – and the club’s supporters were frustrated with his performance on Twitter.
The 26-year-old was replaced by the returning Philippe Coutinho in the second-half and failed to stamp his authority in the match.
The Merseyside club fell to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final and will need a much improved performance in the return leg at Anfield.
Nathan Redmond scored the winning goal in the first-half, but it could have been more comfortable for the hosts if Loris Karius had not delivered a sound performance.
Wijnaldum started in midfield alongside Emre Can and Lucas, but the trio failed to help their side going forward.

That midfield of ours is disgraceful. How Klopp hasnt addressed it by signing a proper CM is a joke.
Wtf is the point of Wijnaldum? #LFC

Wijnaldum has been a regular feature in the club’s starting XI since his summer arrival from Newcastle and has impressed for the most part.
Jurgen Klopp has preferred on a midfield trio of Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson and WIjnaldum this campaign, but he was unable to pick his first-choice combination.
The Dutchman has made 23 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, scoring two goals and supplying four assists.
He has managed to add more defensive qualities to his game during his stay at the Merseyside club, but has lost some of the goal threat he showed at Newcastle.
