Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Coutinho injury update

By Emma Sanders

Liverpool fans were left feeling disappointed on Twitter after Jurgen Klopp revealed Philippe Coutinho is “unlikely” to be fit for the clash against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.

The Brazilian has been out of action since the 2-0 victory against Sunderland in November and had originally set the clash against Manchester city as a potential return date.

He is unlikely to feature in the fixture though, with Klopp revealing he has not taken part in training yet and has already ruled Coutinho out of the game against Stoke on Boxing Day.

Asked about Coutinho’s return, the Liverpool manager said, as quoted by the personal Twitter account of Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce: “He can’t rush. It was a serious injury. We need to wait. Man City? Always very unlikely.”

Prior to his injury, Coutinho was in sensational form and notched up five goals and five assists in his first 13 appearances in the Premier League.

He was one of Liverpool’s best players and it was a major blow when he was ruled out through injury and he missed the crucial Merseyside derby victory against Everton in Monday evening.

Here is a selection of the messages on Twitter:

In his absence, Divock Origi has excelled and has scored five goals in his last six games after featuring regularly as a centre-forward, with Roberto Firmino moving into Coutinho’s position.

Fans hoped Coutinho would be back for the crucial clash against Manchester City because both teams are currently battling it out in the race for the title.

Coutinho scored a vital late goal in the 3-2 victory against City in 2014 when Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title, coming runners-up to the Manchester side by two points.
