Liverpool fans react furiously on Twitter over Joel Matip debacle
By Emma Sanders
Liverpool fans have reacted furiously on Twitter as the club continues to await the decision from FIFA on whether Joel Matip can play for them while Cameroon are in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Reds’ key defender has not featured since the 2-2 draw against West Ham on 11th December because he picked up an injury before facing a battle with the football organisation over his refusal to play for his country.
Matip has not played for Cameroon for 18 months and he made it clear that he didn’t want to be selected for the Africa Cup of Nations squad.
He remained stubborn despite more attempts from Cameroon to get him to change his mind, but despite Liverpool seeking clarification from FIFA over his availability, they’re still not sure whether they can play him without sanction or not.
It looks like they may have to go without him while Cameroon remain in the tournament.

Liverpool supporters have taken their frustration to Twitter, as reliable journalists in Merseyside have struggled to find any valid reasons for Matip’s absence.

It also looked like Klopp could get himself in trouble with what he says. Never seen him so stuck for words like that.

Surely if Matip has retired and refuses to play, by forcing him to do so FIFA are opening up a whole new can of worms.

But we could get knocked out the FA cup

this is a total joke and fifa are adding to it even though they have the power to resolve it all very simply!

he hasn't played for them for getting on 2 years. why has there never been an issue in that 2 year period?

So Cameroon have effectively forced Joel Matip's international retirement, I'd imagine. Not sure that's the result they were hoping for…

Fans were furious when Jurgen Klopp was forced to omit Matip from the matchday squad when Liverpool travelled to Old Trafford to face Manchester United last Sunday but they may have to accept the absence of the defender once again when they take on Plymouth in the FA Cup this Wednesday.
Matip joined on a free transfer from Schalke in the summer but he has become a central figure in Klopp’s side and is considered by many to be the best defender at Liverpool.
