Liverpool backed to complete 'huge' midfielder signing in January after source's Declan Rice update - pundit

Paul Robinson has suggested Liverpool should be in the market for a Premier League midfielder when the transfer window re-opens.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one is adamant the club have “learnt their lesson” from the loan signing of Arthur Melo in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for midfield reinforcements in January.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg (1 November), the Reds are interested in signing RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer.

Sources have told Football Insider (8 October) that Liverpool also have a strong interest in both Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

Rice has no plans to sign a new contract at the London Stadium.

His current deal runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked by Football Insider if a Premier League midfielder would be preferable for Jurgen Klopp’s side in January, Robinson said: “They will not just sign for signings sake.

“They will have learnt their lesson from Arthur, I’m sure.

“It would be a huge boost if they can get a centre-midfielder in January. I think they will be looking for someone with real quality. Only a top quality midfielder would have an impact immediately.

“Ideally it would be someone from the Premier League to help with that settling in process.

“Could they get Declan Rice in January? I highly doubt it but they definitely need to strengthen the midfield.”
