Liverpool hero Luis Garcia is on the verge of smashing football world-record at Malaysian club JDT

Liverpool hero Luis Garcia is on the verge of breaking the longest unbeaten run in world football at Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta’zim.

Garcia is currently the CEO of the Asian side and has helped oversee their dominance in the Malaysia Super League.

Last week, they smashed PDRM 7-0 and claimed their sixtieth point of the season after just 20 matches and are currently 18 points clear at the summit.

As a result, they have also extended their league unbeaten run to 104 and are just five games away from breaking the all-time record set by Ivory Coast side ASEC Mimosas, which currently stands at 108.

Below, Football Insider has explored the impact Luis Garcia has had on the Malaysian club.

Luis Garcia has continued to oversee success at JDT

Since leaving Liverpool in 2007, Garcia has had a slightly odd career path.

After a stint at Atletico Madrid, he took his talents around the globe, playing at clubs such as Greek side Panathinaikos, Mexican sides Puebla and UNAM, Indian outfit ATK and finally Australian club Central Coast Mariners.

Garcia has had a highly successful football career

Since retirement, he has continued to showcase his skills around the globe and took over as CEO of JDT in April 2025.

Going into the Malaysian club, JDT were already heavily dominant, and have currently won 12 straight league titles.

Much of this is down to heavy investment, elite facilities and a clear long-term vision — with the Crown Prince personally leading the transformation.

From a world-class stadium to attracting international stars, the project has turned the club into one of the fastest-rising forces in Asian football.

Garcia has helped facilitate this rise, and now, the club could set an outstanding league unbeaten record.

Can Billy Hogan learn from Luis Garcia at Liverpool?

Recently,  ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that multiple key figures would have been needed to buy into Liverpool’s proposed multi-club model before it was scrapped.

In many ways, it was crazy to think it went as far as it did, with the model being highly unpopular among many fanbases.

Chelsea are just one club who have become frustrated with their ownership’s vision, with their links with Strasbourg being one of many reasons.

This, combined with the club’s recent fall-off in the Premier League, has put Liverpool’s leadership in an unpopular position.

Therefore, the Reds’ CEO, Billy Hogan, may have to look over to Garcia and learn from JDT’s CEO on how to increase their success.
