Liverpool hold 'advantage' over Real Madrid in race to sign Jude Bellingham - pundit

Kevin Campbell has claimed Liverpool have the “advantage” over Real Madrid in the race to sign Jude Bellingham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said English players tend to favour Premier League clubs over the Spanish giants because of their nationality.

According to The Athletic‘s Jay Harris (11 September), the Reds and Real Madrid are jostling to sign the midfielder next year.

Sources revealed to Football Insider (27 August) that Jurgen Klopp’s side have held extensive talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for the centre-midfielder for the summer of next year.

Bellingham has three years remaining on his contract at the Signal Iduna Park.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the race to sign the England international, Campbell said: “When you are going for top players you are always going to have the big boys in competition with you.

“Look at the names, Liverpool and Real Madrid. I am sure there will be a few more who would be interested as well. Liverpool have to leverage their name and try and persuade Bellingham to join.

“At the end of the day, if it is Real Madrid or Liverpool the money is normally the same. You are not going to get one blowing the other out of the water. Bellingham will have to take his pick.

“The thing is, he is English. That could be an advantage for Liverpool because that club is an institution in England. It can carry a bit more weight than Real Madrid with English players.

“Foreign players always want to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona but that might not be the case with Bellingham.

“I think Liverpool stand a really good chance of getting him. Ultimately, it will come down to the player’s preference.”
