Liverpool must forget reported world-record fee, answer to PL problem is giant at fraction of cost

COMMENT

Liverpool need a new goalkeeper.

Jurgen Klopp knows it, the fans know it and Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius probably know it too.

It’s one of the two problem areas that Klopp has to solve if he wants to lift the Premier League trophy.

The other is the back four in front of the keeper – but that’s a story for a different day.

If reports are true, Klopp is thinking of throwing money at the problem.

Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte claim that Liverpool have already held talks with Roma keeper Allison, and he wants to join the Klopp revolution.

UOL claim that Alisson is set to become the most expensive goalkeeper in history this summer, surpassing the world-record £34.7million that Manchester City paid for his Brazil teammate Ederson Moraes.

Klopp doesn’t need to do that – the solution is much closer to home and probably available at a fraction of the cost.

Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel has had a fine career for club and country, but he’s never scaled the heights his dad did at Manchester United.

He has won the Premier League but he needs to make one last big move to cement his legacy – and he would be perfect for Liverpool.

The 31-year-old has great distribution, has played at the highest level for club and country, and has the confidence that any great goalie needs.

He’s still quick and his shot-stopping is second to none.

He might not be the sort of glamour buy that Liverpool fans are used to under Klopp, but he’s the perfect buy at the perfect time.

Klopp should go all-out to get the deal done.
