Finance guru: New Liverpool hire will ‘break new ground’ as £217m-plus reveal expected soon

Whoever is appointed as the next commercial director at Liverpool will be tasked with increasing the number of club partnerships.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ ambitions in the commercial sphere.

The Daily Mail reported last Monday (17 January) that Matt Scammell has left the club to take up the post of chief commercial officer of Formula E.

Liverpool earned £217million in commercial income for the 2019-20 campaign under Scammell’s supervision.

Per the Liverpool Echo last Thursday (20 January), that figure is set to rise when their 2020-21 accounts are released in the next few weeks.

Plumley insists that whoever fills the void left by Scammell will look to further boost their commercial income by negotiating multiple new deals.

“The task is relatively simple,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Whoever comes into that role, they need to increase the number of commercial partners. That is always the first aim.

“It’s to do with who those partners are and where you see new opportunities in the market.

“Liverpool have been quite vocal in that they see new technologies as a way forward.

“From the club side of things, they have to keep pace with Man City, who have raised the bar.

“Moving into new markets and breaking new ground is front and centre for any commercial officer in football at the moment.”

Liverpool are expected to post an overall loss when their 2020-21 accounts are published.

Man City are the only Premier League team so far to have posted a surplus for the Covid-hit season.
