Liverpool news: Fabio Carvalho quits by text message and pundit is not surprised at all
Paul Robinson has leapt to the defence of Fabio Carvalho after the Liverpool winger quit Portugal’s under-21s.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one revealed communication from international set-ups to players is often done over text message.
As reported by the Daily Mail (15 November), a statement from the Portuguese FA confirmed Carvalho had informed the national team via SMS messages that he does not intend to represent them anymore.
The ex-Fulham starlet could now switch allegiances to play for England, should he choose.
According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside (22 November), the player wants to take his time before making a decision on his international future.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the manner in which Carvalho quite Portugal’s under-21s, Robinson said: “I would not be surprised it the Portugal FA text the players when they are in the squad.

“You might say it is bizarre but that is how you find out with England. I would not be surprised if Carvalho has just returned the message by saying, “No, thank you.” Of course, there would be more information around that.
“At the end of the day, it is the Under-21s. It is not the senior team.
“My generation, you pick up the phone and do things differently. The younger generation communicate in a very different way though.”
Carvalho joined Liverpool from Fulham in the summer.
He has scored twice in 16 appearances across all competitions.
