Liverpool news: Pundit issues 'unbelievable' Thiago Alcantara claim after new development

Frank McAvennie has claimed Liverpool need to sign someone who can “do the graft” for Thiago Alcantara.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested the Reds should have signed Man City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Thiago returned to Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup in the 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday (13 September).

The Spaniard had been sidelined with a hamstring problem after the first game of the season but is now fit enough to make the Reds starting XI.

The 31-year-old was a substitute in the previous Champions League fixture against Napoli on 7 September).

As reported by the Athletic (16 September), the midfielder has been left out of the Spanish international squad for their upcoming Nations League games against Switzerland and Portugal.

Thiago withdrew from the Nations League games in June due to injury and has been omitted from Luis Enrique’s final international squad before the World Cup.

McAvennie suggested Jurgen Klopp needs to sign someone to help out the midfielder.

You see the difference Thiago makes, he’s an unbelievable player,” he told Football Insider.

They need to get somebody in who can do the graft for him. That would be great. Phillips would have been ideal for Liverpool. He just sits in there and would win the ball for Thiago.

That’s the kind of player they need if [Jordan] Henderson’s not going to be fit. [James] Milner’s so experienced, he’s been a great servant but it’s a young mans’ game in midfield now. Thiago is 31 but he’s got a couple of years left.
