Liverpool news: Pundit verdict on new Luis Diaz transfer fear as Real Madrid cited

Noel Whelan has claimed Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota won’t be worried about the competition for places at Liverpool following Cody Gakpo’s arrival.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds are now on par with the likes of Man City and Real Madrid when it comes to attacking talent.

Liverpool announced the signing of Gakpo last week (28 December) and he officially became a Reds player on 1 January.

The Netherlands international has already scored 16 goals for club and country this season.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (27 December) that the deal to bring Gakpo to Anfield will cost a total of £82million when his £120,000-a-week, six-year contract is factored in.

As per talkSPORT (26 December), Luis Diaz is expected to be out until March with a knee injury, while Diogo Jota could be out of action until early February.

When asked if Gakpo’s arrival will be a worry for the injured duo, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think so.

“The best clubs in the world have got a number of top players in every position.

“Look at Man City, Real Madrid, PSG, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. You can never have too many attacking players in the armoury.

“This is just bringing more youth into the side, and I think they need to do that in the midfield area too.

“I think Diaz, Nunez, Gakpo – that front three is the future, and it should worry other teams.

“A lot of teams were after Gakpo, but they’ve got in very quickly during the World Cup. What a fantastic signing it could prove to be.”
