Kieran Maguire: Liverpool ‘not happy’ as Uefa ready to snatch away £150m lifeline

Liverpool won’t be happy if Uefa alters plans to award two Champions League spots based on historic performance.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about reported changes to Europe’s top club competition.

As per The Times on 18 August, Uefa is considering scrapping plans to award to Champions League spots based on past achievement.

The plans were slated to be rolled out in tandem with the new Swiss model format from 2024.

Maguire told this site in April that Champions League qualification is worth a minimum of £40million and a maximum of £150m for Liverpool.

And the spreadsheet expert predicts the six-time champions will be furious that their safety net may potentially be snatched away.

Liverpool will not be happy,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“When the Super League clubs stopped threatening and created the competition, it took away one of their bargaining chips.

“They could no longer say that if they didn’t get the concessions they wanted, theyd form their own league.

“The Swiss model probably gave them 80 to 90 per cent, but they wanted the whole lot.

“So not getting guaranteed access to the Champions does remove a safety net. But there is certainly a bigger chance than before that this will be shelved.

“It will have an impact on clubs like Liverpool who may potentially finish 5th or 6th one season.

“They could then bank on qualifying because they have excellent 10-year coefficient.
