Mills shares definitive verdict on Henderson quitting Liverpool after source update

Liverpool have “finally sorted out” Jordan Henderson’s future as he is close to signing a new deal.

That is the view of ex-Premier League and England defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club captain’s immediate future.

Football Insider revealed on 17 August Liverpool are in advanced talks to secure Henderson to a mega-money new deal.

Jurgen Klopp wants the 31-year-old to put pen to paper before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2023 and there was some speculation linking him to a move away.

Asked for his assessment of Henderson’s situation, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild: “I said all along he’s still under contract so it was never really going to go anywhere. That’s the way I looked at it.

“It was just a game of negotiations, testing things out and working out what was what. He probably wanted an extra couple of years and after 30 that doesn’t really happen that often. It is what it is.

“They’ve finally got everything sorted. It’s a bit like the James Milner situation. He’s an outstanding player and offers so much more than what he brings on the pitch, those leadership skills and everything else. That’s vitally important.”

Henderson has scored 30 goals and provided 51 assists in 392 games across all competitions for Liverpool since signing from Sunderland in 2011.

The 64-time England international has won the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup while club captain.
